What is Real-time and Backward capability in CAN FD?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Real-time capability

The multiple independent data packets are combined into a single message means that data administration can be made simpler in a considerable amount. Since there is no longer the need for an individual message that needs to be synchronized with one another at great cost.

The larger data packets can be transmitted fast by comparison to classic CAN, enables the transfer of 8 times the data volume and its of 64 bytes in size that is roughly at the same time requires a classic 8-byte CAN message. Thereby, the high-priority messages are transmitted quickly and the capability of real-time is improved.

Backward compatibility

The frequent requirement of switching from CAN to a faster communication system for a complete conversion is one of its disadvantages. For eg. EtherCAT. The machine controller can alternatively be considered as an extension to be used in multiple heterogeneous networks.

CAN FD got its advantage being an additional gentler where it can be used as a classic CAN node and gradually replaced CAN FD is device capable. As the CAN FD became capable in the entire network, the advantage was used to the fullest extent.

The interest was particularly for special-purpose machinery, as well as for network participants where the available free nodes are quite not often replaced here mainly in customer-specific devices or devices that are internally developed.
