As per markets and markets, the market size for global robotaxi is projected to grow from 617 units in 2021 to 1,445,822 units by 2030 with a CAGR of 136.8%.

The key market players in robotaxi are Waymo (US), Cruise LLC (US), Baidu (China), AutoX (China), and Tesla (US).

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxi will be launched by 2023.

The IONIQ 5 robotaxi is an SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicle that can operate without a driver. The first key benefit of autonomous robotaxis is the safety aspect. It is the first robotaxi model by the partnership between Hyundai and Aptiv.

IONIQ5 will be fully electric. “The IONIQ 5 robotaxi is the embodiment of the two most transformative technologies in mobility coming together in one vehicle: electrification and autonomy. This zero-emissions robotaxi will not only make transportation safer and more accessible – but it’ll also make it more sustainable.” Hyundai.

IONIQ 5 is based on Hyundai’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The interior of the robotaxi is enough space, a comfortable place to relax or socialize during the driverless ride. The interior also features “rider-focused human-machine hardware to allow passengers to intuitively interact with the vehicle during their ride.” Users can also make an additional stop when it is required.

A suite of external sensors is used in the passenger car to let the passenger know they are riding a robotaxi service.

The three important characteristics of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi are:-

  • Sensors
  • Redundancies
  • Remote Vehicle Assistance (RVA)

Also,

  • 30 sensors with a combination of LiDAR, radar, and cameras are installed for 360-degree vision.
  • Redundant coverage for operating safely in a wide range of driving environments.

The reasons for using all three radar, LiDAR, and camera are:-

  • No impact weather on radar,
  • A good range and distance data are provided by LiDAR,
  • And different objects are identified by cameras.

IONIQ 5 is also backed by a second system if the first one fails. It includes brakes, steering, communication, and power.

“‘Remote Vehicle Assistance (RVA)’ is ready to prepare the vehicle for all kinds of unpredictable scenarios such as construction zones, road flooding, or unexpected and illegal behaviors from other road users. When this happens, a Motional remote operator can connect to the vehicle’s autonomous system instantaneously and either provide the car with a new path to follow or offer other kinds of assistance.”
