The land of the automobile industry, Deutschland. Do we get to see more variations in electric cars or it will just be the same old journey?

As per a survey by ZSW, electric cars have been segmented into mini, small cars, compact class, middle class, upper-middle-class, upper class, vans, Utility, SUV, and sports cars. The number of electric cars got registered in 2020 is more than 25,000 whereas in 2019, more than 60,000 new registrations (Source: KBA).

In 2019, the top ten models got registered with a significantly higher number were Renault Zoe, BMW i3, Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen Golf, Smart Fortwo, Audi E-Tron, Hyundai Kona, Nissan Leaf, Smart Forfour, and Kia Soul.  The market share for the battery-electric car is far greater than the plug-in hybrid cars.

The top 10 vehicle models sold after 2018 in electric or Hybrid in Germany are:-

  1. Toyota Yaris
  2. Toyota C-HR
  3. VW Golf
  4. Toyota RAV 4
  5. Renault Zoe
  6. Toyota Auris
  7. BMW i3
  8. HyundaiIoniq
  9. BMW 2er Active Tourer
  10. Toyota Auris Touring Sport

The top 10 electric vehicle manufacturers with the significantly higher number of new registration are:-

  1. Tesla
  2. Renault
  3. BMW
  4. VW
  5. Hyundai
  6. Audi
  7. Nissan
  8. Kia
  9. Jaguar
  10. Mercedes

In my opinion, the market provides a clear picture battle between the local brands and the international brands.

The competition is tough but the customer looks keen to try out the new range of electric vehicles provided by a different manufacturer. A European market open not just to Tesla but also to Hyundai or Kia shows the versatility among the consumer or the purchaser. The market is quite mixed and accepting of varieties.
