As we can see the demand for smart charging being rising up more and more but how does the communication work for smart charging.
The charging station and the vehicle need to negotiate before transmitting energy and ensure that both entities speak the same language i.e. it follows the standard, ISO 15118 or DIN 70121. Once a common standard is found and a high-level of the communication link is established, the driver defines whether an encrypted and secure communication is needed by using known TLS (Transport Layer Security) standards.
Various validated certificates are accordingly exchanged where the driver knows what communication is taking place in a secure environment. Moreover, the offers from the charging station are also provided by the driver where services can be selected. These services are mostly defined by various OEMs and third-party vendors. The services currently included are updating safety certificates or even intelligent charging itself.
The used information is stored in the vehicles where drivers can authenticate automatically. Once an authentication step is completed, communication and charging process planning begins. The target has been set by the vehicle for the charging process, such as the departure time or the planned charge level and sending the information to the charging station.
Depending upon the charging environment, the charging options are suggested by various charging station that meets the driver’s requirements. The plans are adopted by the software and after negotiation shortly between the charging station and the vehicles, as per the agreed charging plan, the charging process is initiated.
It is not needed for the driver to be in the vehicle or near the charging station for the charging process to complete. The process is done automatically and quickly. Various information during the charging cycle such as measured values or charge status is exchanged. The system or user is able to influence the process of charging at any time of the charging. If a 100% charging level is not achieved by the time the vehicle has to leave then the electric vehicle gets to negotiate for a new charging plan with a charging station.
Isn’t it cool and super smart!!!
