What is Vehicle-to-Grid communication?

Reading Time: < 1 minutes

The implementation standard for any electromobility vehicle is based on ISO 15118 that is divided into nine separate parts. The use cases around the public and private charging infrastructure are defined in the first document of ISO 15118-1. In this document, concrete use cases are defined as charging infrastructure providers and vehicle manufacturers.

In the second document of ISO 15118-2, the core element of TIC (Telemotive Intelligent Charging) is defined. The communication protocol in this area works as a communication stack and it is extended over ISO-OSI layers i.e. three to seven. Well, known protocols like TCP/IP Version 6, the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols are present.

The protocols that are new, were developed specifically for intelligent loading. The TIC stack, for example, consists of a transport protocol, known as Vehicle-to-Grid Transport Protocol where the communication data size is reduced to about four percent of the original XML data size. An intelligent compression algorithm was developed with Magna Telemotive that is called an Efficient XML Interchange (EXI).

In all, 17 different message types are present in the application layer messages. A loading process is been supported that specifically tailored the individual requirements of a driver. On the lower ISO-OSI layers, the ISO-15118-3 document defines the hardware physical connection.

The place where Power Line Communication (PLC) or Green PHY is important. The remaining four to nine parts from ISO 15118 are defined as the requirement for wireless communication and conformance tests that are associated.
