As per anybus.com, it is defined as one of the three open network standards (DeviceNet, ControlNet, and EtherNet/IP), use a common application layer. It is known as the “Common Industrial Protocol” (CIP).
The CIP family network is specified and published by ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association) and CI (ControlNet International).
A good real-time capability is offered by providing high-speed deterministic transmission for critical time for I/O data and messaging data. Rockwell Automation was the main source in the origin of ControlNet and it was managed by the ControlNet International User organization.
In time-critical applications, ControlNet is mainly very popular where it is based on Rockwell Automation technology.
