As per HMS (Hardware meet Software), the Industrial Ethernet network market is surpassing the traditional field buses, which will keep on continue in the coming years. 20% is the growth rate with a global market share for Industrial Ethernet is 59%. As per the study, the market share for EtherNet/IP is 15% and PROFINET is close to 14%. EtherCAT’s market share is 7%, Ethernet POWERLINK is 5% and 4% for Modbus TCP with stable growth.

As per HMS analysis, the Fieldbuses growth is negative. 35% is accounted for fieldbuses for nodes that are newly installed. The market share for PROFIBUS is 10%, one of the dominant fieldbuses around the world, CC-Link is 6% and 5% for Modbus RTU.

As per Thilo Döring, Managing Director of HMS, Germany: “The transition to Industrial Ethernet continues. The main drivers for this are users that need high performance on one hand and want to connect factory installations with IT systems or IIoT applications on the other. For the first time, we are observing that traditional fieldbuses are declining in relation to newly installed nodes.

For Industrial Ethernet, we see good growth for many networks- both in terms of established networks such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, EtherCAT, POWERLINK, and Modbus-TCP, as well as networks that we have grouped together in the other Ethernet category.

This fragmented Ethernet picture is very interesting. It shows that Industrial Ethernet has never been standardized in a single network-something that many industry experts predicted as early as the 1990s when Ethernet-based networks first appeared. As with fieldbuses, one of the factors that determine which network is best suited to a particular industrial application is the Ethernet network.”
