How PROFINET was developed?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

An innovative open standard for an industrial Ethernet that was developed by Siemens and the Profibus User Organization (PNO) is defined as PROFINET. The solutions for factory and process automation can be implemented with PROFINET such as for safety applications or for clock synchronization motion that is used for the drive technology of an entire range.

The standard for PROFINET is IEC 61158 and IEC 61784. Usually, the products from PROFINET are PNO certified by user organizations with worldwide guaranteeing capability.

PROFINET is mainly based on Ethernet that used TCP/IP standards. IT standards usually complement them with specific protocols and mechanisms to achieve good real-time performance.

The integration of the existing Fieldbus system (PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, and InterBus) is enabled by PROFINET without changing to existing devices. The investments of plant operators, machine and system builders, and device manufacturers are also protected.
