What is the situation with public charging connectors in the UK?

At present one of the concerns is the availability of public charging connectors. The availability of the connectors in the UK shows the demand for the fast charger is high as compared to any other charger.

One of the big disadvantages of an electric vehicle is the waiting time to charge its vehicle. The traditional vehicles are mostly driven by fuel which can be filled within a few minutes. The time is way less than any electric vehicle.

In 2017, the three kinds of charging connectors were available in the UK, slow charger, fast charger, and rapid charger.

The difference between a rapid charger and a faster charger is the speed required to charge the EV at a lesser time. A rapid charger depending on the vehicle model, i.e. the power available for the vehicle model will charge the vehicle at a speed from 150 to 350 KW in an estimated time range of 10 to 45 minutes.

Whereas, a fast charger can charge a vehicle at a maximum speed of 50 KW within an estimated time range of 15 to 20 minutes. A normal charger will take 30 minutes to more than 12 hours to charge an EV.

In 2018, Ultrarapid charger connectors were introduced. The demand increased in 2019 by almost double. However, the major issues are with the cost. The fast-charging connectors are expensive. Around 2000 ultrarapid charging connectors were available in the UK. 6000 rapid charging connectors and 18000 fast-charging connectors were available in the UK market.

Currently, 5 different types of electric vehicle charging stations are available in the UK. The normal charging station (<=22KW), ChaDeMo fast-charging station (=62.5KW), Type-2AC charging connectors, CCS and Tesla SC (super Charger).

ChaDeMo is a DC charging station for electric vehicles. CCS is known as the combined charging system. It uses Combo 1 and Combo 2 connectors to provide a power of  350 KW. The difference between these two is the capability of CCS to charge AC/DC on the same port whereas ChaDeMo is equipped with an additional J1772 connector.

The average cost for charging at Tesla SC is $0.25 per KW for Model S or Model X purchased after January 2017. Currently, Tesla SC can recharge the EV up to 200 miles in 15 minutes. The range of the DC charging speed was from 90 KW to 250 KW.
