Michael Rada is known as the Father of Industry 5.0. In 2015, Michael Rada, a Czech entrepreneur founded Industry 5.0.
Let’s read and listen to Michael Rada about the importance of industrial upcycling and focus on a waste-less world.
Q: Tell me about yourself and your journey to Industry 5.0. What sparked your interest in Industry 5.0?
Michael Rada: I am a simple man who started his career as a steel factory worker in 1990, with no academic education. At the end of my career as an employee, I was on board the European logistics division of the second-largest Japanese corporation.
With 42 I left the role and the company and started my entrepreneur journey to BUILD WASTELESS WORLD FOR ALL and on this journey, I launched on December 1, 2015, INDUSTRY 5.0. Since 2013 I have been implementing INDUSTRY 5.0 principles in companies and businesses, leading a network in 118 countries including India, and global maritime environments.
Q: How does Industry 5.0 differ from Industry 4.0?
Michael Rada: Back in 2013, I left the corporation because I realized there was something wrong with the industrial development and INDUSTRY 4.0 had issues nobody spoke about.
This is why I introduced the methodology named INDUSTRIAL UPCYCLING, which represents the only in history systematic waste prevention methodology. This methodology became the groundstone of INDUSTRY 5.0 where it prevents five types of waste from happening PHYSICAL, SOCIAL, URBAN, PROCESS, and WASTING OF TIME.
The main difference between INDUSTRY 4.0 (all previous industrial revolutions) and INDUSTRY 5.0 is that INDUSTRY 5.0 is not a revolution but represents THE FIRST INDUSTRIAL EVOLUTION EVER LED BY MAN (HUMAN) INDUSTRY 5.0 RESTORES THE MISSING LINK BETWEEN NATURE AND HUMAN MADE ECOSYSTEMS.
All industrial revolutions concentrate on production volume increase, INDUSTRY 5.0 on levelization of produced and truly needed quantity. At the same time, none of the Industrial Revolution care about HUMANS and even less about WASTE VOLUMES. This is what INDUSTRY 5.0 does in the first instance.
Q: Can you shed light on the role of waste reduction in Industry 5.0?
Michael Rada: Systematic waste reduction is a core task of INDUSTRY 5.0, but waste is not just physical, INDUSTRY 5.0 recognizes 5 types of waste listed above. Instead of managing waste, INDUSTRY 5.0 prevents waste from happening and this is a unique and very powerful tool, which helps in 11 years to prevent more than 10 MIL MT of products and materials from becoming waste.
At the same time, this approach helped INDUSTRY 5.0 become, without any funding, incentives, or investors in just 9 years of existence the LEADING GLOBAL INDUSTRIAL TREND OF A CENTURY (according to BIG FOUR statements, and many more)
Q: Could you demonstrate real-world examples of the practical impact of Industry 5.0? Any success stories?
Michael Rada: From the beginning board secondary utilization of single-use packaging, from wooden pallets, over plastic boxes, to metal crates and packaging.
Full factory-size project in which instead of wasting the equipment 98% has been refurbished and the factory building was repurposed as well up to the biggest and oldest steel foundry in the country, which not only is being de-dusted (after 185 years of existence) but waste is turned into unique new heat battery type, that will help to stabilize the electric and city-wide heating and cooling network not only in the country but abroad.
Q: What practical advice you would provide to companies for a seamless transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0?
Michael Rada: INDUSTRY 5.0 is not about investment, the first step is the change of mindset from wasteful to wasteless. It is recommended to realize PROFUSION AUDIT, which will help not only to identify the OTGM but will find and support the implementation of its utilization, which can scale up profitability, whereas before waste management represented only cost.

Q: What changes do you foresee in the widespread adoption of Industry 5.0 in India?
Michael Rada: The changes are clearly visible in INDIA and not only there. In INDIA the INDUSTRY 5.0 AGE started on August 21, 2020, with one and only WAKE-UP CALL INDUSTRY 5.0 KEYNOTE delivered at the largest online conference of the year organized by CII.
The only step that needs to be realized now is to narrow the understanding of the term and its principles. INDUSTRY 5.0 IS NOT A SALES TOOL, BUZZWORD, AI, OR TECHNOLOGY. It is the new mindset and the new global ecosystem that breaks the silos. It is necessary to understand that DEGROWTH is not fail, but a solution. Q: What will be the next of Industry 5.0? What is your future vision that could take the legacy of Industry 5.0 to the next?
Michael Rada: INDUSTRY 5.0 is EVOLUTION and evolution never ends, this is why it will remain and as more and more people and businesses understand and apply its principles it will become the global leading force that will transfer the global landfill (which our planet and orbit remind us of) to WASTELESS WORLD.
