India is known as one of the powerhouses of the Asian market, with industrial growth. The generation of waste is also steadily increasing and rising. Hence, we need to get ready to combat the growth of waste in a humungous manner.

Plastic Waste

During 2019-2020, India generated approximately 25,940 tonnes of plastic waste on a daily scale. The market of India Plastic recycling is growing at a value of USD 4,090.8 Million in 2024 with an expected increase to USD 6,933.2 million by 2033.

Overall Waste

In the financial year 2023, India processed 76% of the total waste generated across the nation. As per the State of Waste Management Report, the current state of waste management in India covers various aspects such as recycling, composting, and waste reduction.

Legislation and Initiatives

As per the Solid Waste Management Rules (SWMR), 2016 emphasizes recovery and reuse. The efforts for reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices are supporting various activities such as waste streams, including plastics, textiles, and food.

In India, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) is responsible for regulating and managing waste across the country. Waste is broadly categorized depending on its origin, composition, and environmental impact, with specific rules and compliances in place for safe handling and disposal of the various types of waste.”

“As per the Annual Report of Central Pollution Control Board for the year 2021-22, the average quantity of solid waste generated in India is 1,70,338 TPD, of which 91,512 TPD is treated.” 

The leading MSW-generating state is Maharashtra. The share of the waste processed in India is 76%.

The data of solid waste generation,

India generated approximately 119,260 tonnes of solid waste per day during 2019-2020.

In 2020-21, solid waste generation remained consistent at around 119,070 tonnes per day. In 2021-22, the average quantity of solid waste generation increased by around 170,338 tonnes per day.
