Large AI frontier model

California’s controversial bill for the larger frontier AI model companies

Why California’s Controversial bill is causing the heatwave in the big Tech AI model companies?

The large-scale machine-learning models with the exceeding capabilities of the most advanced existing models in the present days are known as Frontier AI models.

As per California’s AI bill, the term “large” is defined as those AI systems that are trained with a computing power of 10^26  floating operations per second (FLOPS) with the training process costing more than USD 100 million (Rs 834 crore, approximately).

Examples of the current frontier AI models are GPT-4, Claude 3, and Gemini Ultra.

Let’s look at the California’s AI bill,

According to Indian Express,

“When AI models are open source, it means that their inner workings can be freely accessed or modified by anyone, thus ensuring greater transparency and improved security. But the proposed California bill could discourage companies like Meta from making their AI models open source as they could be held responsible for other developers misusing the technology.”

California's Controversial Bill

What do you think about the argument?

The California bill is considered the doomsday for the evolution of the AI model’s journey. The argument over the safety issues vs the transparency of the large frontier model. Where does the future of humans or mankind stand?

At one point, we are constraining the growth of AI, i.e. no doubt took a great hit in our daily life. From being a savior to some of them to even losing the job of most employees of the tech companies.

The tech companies have set their goals, and the next destination is the AI, large frontier models, but the scenario is not smooth with the senators and the policymakers. As we don’t know the unknown calamity and the power it can have over countries to get into an ugly fight.

Till now, we have seen the internet’s power to bridge the gap much faster than even flying with airplanes, and social media’s power to make you an instant hit, but how about AI safety?

The dark side of the internet has also been explored as how pornography, or even hidden video camera recording violates your personal and private moments and becomes a money-making machine.

An article issued last year by the OpenAI Society stating the importance of the Frontier Model Forum,

The objective of the Frontier Model Forum lies in the advancement of AI safety for a responsible approach.

The Frontier Model Forum is an industry body formed by organizations such as Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

Kent Walker, President, Global Affairs, Google & Alphabet said: “We’re excited to work together with other leading companies, sharing technical expertise to promote responsible AI innovation. We’re all going to need to work together to make sure AI benefits everyone.”

However, with California’s AI bill, the objective of the Frontier Model Forum seems to be quite questionable.

Where are we heading towards? Towards an AI unknown.
