Disposing of sanitary pads in ecofriendly ways
Discussing sanitary pad waste is a crucial topic, despite its taboo nature. With research reports and expert views, the area of improving the quality of life for women during their menstrual periods is now catching the eyes of experts who are thinking of innovative solutions that provide various ways to handle periods as well as manage waste.
The different solutions, such as cups, tampons, pads, or reusable pants, allow women to manage their periods elegantly. However, the waste created after using these items leads to the hassle of disposal.
1.Reusable pads are some of the easiest and most common ways to handle periods sustainably. The washable pads are used multiple times to reduce landfill waste and packaging. However, the cost of such products makes it quite hard for everyone to rely on them. Also, some mentalities do not find it hygienic to use the reusable pads.
Organic cotton or bamboo products are considered much better for such reusable pads.
2. Biodegradable pads are also some of the best ones to opt for. Over time, the pads break down naturally, unlike their plastic-laden counterparts. But you need to be careful about the quality of the products; organic cotton and those free from chlorine and fragrance are the best ones to go for.
They usually do decompose in six to 12 months. It is quite effective and just the hygiene needs to be handle with proper wash.
3. Sanitary pads cannot be composted. However, startups are providing solutions to discard the waste, such as shredding the organic pads and ensuring proper decomposition.
4.Incineration is the best solution and option to handle the problem of disposing of the pads. It supports separating any non-biodegradable parts first.
Conventional sanitary pads are difficult to handle and also to get rid of completely. The conventional ones harm your health and linger in landfills for centuries. Sustainable options are the best way to care about the planet.
However, sustainable pads or biodegradable pads are quite costly. The challenge over here is to address the cost and not compromise the quality of such sustainable pads. Conventional pads are quite cost-effective but harmful to the planet due to their discarding issue.
In my opinion, other than pads, if we come up with other effective ways, such as self-absorbent ones that can be reusable with a proper wash, then it is quite effective to handle the after-effects. The education through awareness program about how to discard the waste after the use of pads is also important and recommended among the youth.

With the rise of population, the use of pads and the issue of discarding the pads will be on the rise. The goal is to make it clear and effective with the awareness of the waste and how to discard it elegantly to keep our surrounding clean and waste free.
The challenge can not be solved over a night, and may need more nights, than we can imagine, but with effective steps, and considering the issue, the seriousness of solving the problem can lead to better ways of handling the waste.
