According to Audi Board Member for Technology Oliver Hoffmann,
“In the new Q8 e-Tron, we have once again been able to significantly increase both battery capacity and charging power. In this way, we achieve an optimized balance between energy density and charging capability and thus ensure greater efficiency.”
The usable amount of energy for e-Tron 55 increases from 86 to 106 kWh.
Audi uses a distinct cell processing method and changed cell chemistry. The amount of cobalt needed is less than with the prior NMC due to the shift in chemical makeup to NCA (nickel, cobalt, and aluminum) (nickel, manganese, cobalt).
The active substance had previously been wound in the prismatic cells. The four corners were left with space. The active substance is now layered stacked (stacking method). The cell’s area is well-used. Along with improved energy management, the energy density rises by around 20%. From 60 to 72 ampere-hours, the capacity per cell rises.
More range translates into more energy. The e-Tron 55 SUV version has a range increase from 411 to up to 580 km. The e-Tron 55 Sportback should travel up to 600 km. It is somewhat more aerodynamic. 30 percent more people can be reached. The additional battery barely increases the vehicle’s weight by 20 kg. The drag coefficient is reduced by a tenth of a point thanks to aerodynamic modifications. In comparison to the Sportback, the SUV has a drag coefficient of 0.24.
A further benefit of the bigger battery is that it has more power to charge. It rises to 150 kW in the e-Tron 50 from 120 kW. 28 minutes are needed to charge the 89 kWh battery from 10% to 80%. It requires 31 minutes while using the big battery (106 kWh). Here, the charging power rises to a maximum of 170 kW from 150 kW. The 22 kW AC charging capability is still available, as is the second charging outlet which is an optional extra on the right side of the car.
Users are more likely to drive at city and intercity speeds than at motorway speeds,” says Christian Bohn, responsible for e-Tron product marketing, when asked what surprised him most during the revision.
The stator’s copper winding count is increased to 14 from 12 to increase the magnetic field. This version’s engine output rises from 265 to 300 kW and 664 Nm of torque. The S model is restricted to 210 km/h, while the end is still at 200 km/h.
4.92 meters long and 1.94 meters broad make up the Q8 e-Tron (without mirrors). Additionally, you have considerable legroom in the back seats because of the 2.93 m wheelbase.
The Q8 e-Tron still has up to five active radar sensors, five cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors that offer information for assistance functions (Level 2). Remote Parking Assistant plus will be included in 2023. This enables a motorist to use a smartphone app to park and exit his Q8 e-Tron in confined locations.
More recyclable materials are utilised in the new Q8 e-Tron. Audi employs recycled materials in its interior carpets, dampening materials, and insulation. An anthracite-colored technical cloth made in part of recycled PET bottles is offered for the ornamental insert, the so-called Tech Layer above the display.
