A new strategic partnership for Jaguar Land Rover and Wolfspeed for the silicon carbide semiconductor supply.
As per the British car company, “The technology is significant for the next generation of electric vehicles from Jaguar and Land Rover and will increase the efficiency of the drive as well as the range.”
As part of the realignment, Jaguar Land Rover is transforming into a company that puts electrification at the forefront and is on track to be CO2-free in its supply chain, products, services, and business as a whole by 2039.
The inverter of electric cars, which regulates the energy flow from the battery to the electric motors, will be the main application of Wolfspeed’s silicon carbide technology. Because they processing electricity more effectively than traditional semiconductors, silicon carbide-based semiconductors have benefits over those based on other materials.
According to Jaguar Land Rover, the optimized battery control improves the range of electric vehicles and enables faster charging.
“By developing this compound into a strategic partnership as part of our Remind strategy, we can leverage Wolfspeed’s advanced silicon carbide technology in our next-generation electric vehicles, enabling us to offer our customers greater range, performance, and capabilities,” said Thierry Bollore.
Wolfspeed President and CEO, Gregg Lowe, said,
“Wolfspeed is proud to partner with Jaguar Land Rover, supporting its bold commitment to electrify its iconic brands by using Silicon Carbide’s superior performance, efficiency, and range. The energy efficiency of Silicon Carbide will play an essential role as Jaguar Land Rover pursues its own zero-carbon goals, and as the world transitions to an all-electric transportation future.”
The Formula E electric car racing series is already using silicon carbide technology to increase efficiency and performance on the track.
Wolfspeed leads the market in the worldwide adoption of Silicon Carbide and GaN technologies by providing industry-leading solutions for efficient energy consumption and a sustainable future. Wolfspeed’s product families include Silicon Carbide materials, power devices and RF devices targeted for various applications such as electric vehicles, fast charging, 5G, renewable energy and storage, and aerospace and defence.
