In automobiles, data are exchanged between numerous control devices, sensors, and actuators that are carried out via CAN network. The requirements, especially concerning error tolerance and time-determinism for message transmission, are mainly introduced by the new x-by-wire systems.
In fixed time slots, the increased requirements are fulfilled by the transmission of the message. On two channels, the fault-tolerant and redundant messages transmission are fulfilled. Thereby, for example, airbags, the active safety systems are also ideally suited.
In the FlexRay consortium, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, and Volkswagen are major carmakers who are the core partners along with Bosch, Freescale, and Philips Semiconductors are also responsible for FlexRay standard development.
