What is Hokkaido Green Fund?

Reading Time: < 1 minutes

It is an example of community-based green finance which was established in 2000 to finance wind power projects in northern Japan funded by individual investors and donations.

A wind power corporation formed a community that was running wind power, started selling electricity to the company to supply power in those regions. Mostly, the wind power price is 5% higher than other electricity but customers were ready to pay extra to save the environment.

The method was so successful, led to the construction of 19 wind power projects in northern Japan.

The same practice was used in the solar power plant, where the Japanese’s local government seed money as an incentive into a community fund for private investors.
