Sustainable technology refers to the use of technology for achieving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. The term also means the development of technology to minimize its negative impact on the environment and society.

It is an umbrella term for innovation that involves natural resources to foster economic and social development and minimize environmental impact.

In many ways, sustainable technology benefits businesses, such as reducing costs, improving efficiency, enhancing reputation, attracting customers, and complying with regulations.

According to Gartner, 50% of CIOs by 2025 will have performance metrics tied to the sustainability of the IT organization. It is also important for businesses to adopt sustainable technology as a digital solution framework to enable ESG outcomes.

The main importance of Sustainable technology is to put effort into creating solutions that aim to reduce or eliminate causes such as global warming or climate change.

It is also considered, as per the experts, that sustainable technology can create a vibrant ecosystem for business leaders to work towards making sustainability technology a reality.

Sustainable technology can be implemented in many ways in business, such as:

  • The current situation is assessed, and sustainability challenges and opportunities are identified.
  • Sustainability visions and strategies are defined, and clear and measurable goals and targets are set.
  • Sustainable technology solutions are selected and prioritized to achieve the goals.
  • Implementing and monitoring sustainable technology solutions to evaluate the impact and outcomes

The top examples of sustainable technology are:

  • Public and electric transport to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution by using renewable energy sources or batteries instead of fossil fuels.
  • LED light technology uses less energy and lasts longer than traditional incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, saving money and resources.
  • Solar power converts sunlight into electricity or heat, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering the carbon footprint.
  • Carbon capture and storage technologies from industrial processes or the atmosphere for storing it underground or in other forms to prevent global warming.
  • Self-sufficient and LEED buildings and construction methods that use design, materials, and systems to reduce energy consumption, water usage, water generation, and environmental impact
  • Sustainable water purification technologies are designed to remove contaminants from water without causing harm to the environment.
  • Vertical farming and hydroponics are used to grow crops without any soil. It also uses less water and produces higher yields than any traditional method.
  • Smart power management systems are designed to optimize energy usage and reduce waste.
  • Sustainable smartphones with recycled and fairly sourced materials are mainly used to disassemble, repair, and build to last.
  • Eco-friendly toothbrushes are made from sustainable materials and are biodegradable.
  • Plant-based packaging is made from renewable resources and is biodegradable.
  • Food waste recycling methods
  • Green architecture to cut down on urban resources.
  • Waste-to-energy technologies turn biomass waste such as paper, grass, or wood chips into gas and eventually ethanol.

In numerous ways, Sustainable technology can be used in our daily lives or even contribute to changing our lifestyle completely.

However, we cannot deny the importance of non-renewable energy products or services, even though they are depleting. In my opinion, we can use renewable energy sources in combination with non-renewable energy products that are not hazardous and make use of them to find innovative solutions or products.

The cycle of using Green resources and other non-renewable resources is ongoing; we cannot avoid it, but if we start focusing on finding a middle path, we may reach a better future for the next generation.
