It is a pure master/slave system that got very few overheads protocols. This results in Interbus as a well- suited application for the sensor/actuator level. It was first developed by Phoenix contact, Digital Equipment, and the Technical University of Lemgo during the 80s.
It became available in 1988. The communication protocol to this day has remained unchanged virtually. It means, therefore, it is possible that the devices can be connected to the first generation to the most recent master interfaces.
The Interbus application for sensor/actuator level may be ascribed to simple interfacing requirements that are supported by protocol driver chips. The number of external components is reduced as the requirement for the direct input or output interface is minimum. It is subjected to a DIN standard 19258 where level1 and 2 of the protocol are defined among others.
